The objective. Well at least the one we picked after we saw it. We started mid way up the upper section above treeline and came through the open patch in the woods on the left.

Temperatures in the valley were very warm. We went through a warmer layer a little way up the trail as well. Here we layer up a little from the breeze.

On the way down we heard some massive rockfall over on the northwest side of the Middle Teton. About 45 minutes later we heard a rescue chopper. While the rockfall was unrelated there was a climber injured on the other side of the mountain and was short-hauled out. You can see them about 200 feet below the chopper.

One of the ever present millipedes at the Gunks. Once the sun goes down they really come out.

Coming back to Salt Lake. Love this relief.

While the weather looks great it was cool, as evident by the puffy jackets.

Back at camp. A snow storm rolled through and left a dusting. Matt, Carley and I decided we didn't like the prospects of the weather for the remainder of the weekend so we headed back to SLC.

The rest of the ridge we didn't do. At this point there's an overhung rock face topping out onto an unknown height snow mushroom.

We called for a pick up about a week early. Paul was early on pick up day and helped save us a long walk to the plane by landing basically in our camp. The left wing tip is overhanging our camp. Friends and super-couple Kim and Andy headed out with us.

Awesome sunset over Canyonlands National Park.

After some rough roads that the bone stock Jeep handled easily we started our approach.

View from the top looking east-south-west from left to right.

There she is, Desert Shield (5.11a C3). The line goes up from off frame to the left, to the top of the pillar, where the bivy ledge is, to the left edge of the overhanging headwall. Once gaining the headwall from the left side it wraps around to the overhanging face in the center.

I did the climbing on the first three pitches which meant I also hauled the pig holding all our supplies to stay overnight. My performance on these pitches wasn\'t good and I hung and pulled my way through the money 5.11a pitch.

The money second pitch starts as unprotected 5.7 slab and moves to a technical face with spaced bolts. A finger crack begins after the face and turns quickly into a hand and fist crack. It is 170 ft of great climbing that I need to go back to do.

We anticipated rapping off another route from the bivy ledge, but it didn't prove to look appealing.

We opted for a run called the Funnel and it was fabulous. First tracks and soft snow.

While the clouds came in just at sunset there was just a little peak of color at the end of the day.

We took a tourist day and didn't do much but did get a late day dip in Jenny Lake to cool off and wash off.

Looking towards the Dent du Geant. The stark contrast between the rock and snow is one of the reasons I love the mountains. You\'d be hard pressed to find a more stunning example than in Chamonix.

This day was a total washout. It poured buckets all day so we spent most of the time hopping shop to shop.

Massive climb after massive climb.

All of the days were a little on the cloudy and stormy side.

The alpine simulator of Broken Hearts. First three pitches are fun WI3 and then a bunch of canyoneering style walking with rambling ice steps.

Awesome rest on the route. It was a blob of ice with the shape that you could stradle it.

A little below Helen Lake. We skinned up to here, but found it easier, even with ski crampons, to boot from here up.

We still had at least 50 miles of dirt roads to go, but there is a small cabin/outfitter around just a minute or two down the road from Big Sandy Trailhead. They hit the spot.

The distances in this area are deceiving. Freemont Peak here is still a couple hours walk away under good conditions.

Beginning our hike/scramble objective day. This is Island Lake, about a 1/2 mile from our camp. This is the typical area for camping in this zone. A few other parties were camped here.

During this view a climber at the parking lot about 1/4 mile away was playing some soft jazz on a flugelhorn. It was a wonderful sound in a wonderful place, gently echoing in the narrow valley. A great memory of the 2019 Bozeman Ice Fest.

Luckily it was sunny and very warm (55F) otherwise this would have been quite unpleasant. The top of the climb is just visible in the top right.

Brilliant. The only down side is the dough needs to sit for 24-72 hours.

This is the second pie from this new recipe of dough and it was as good as the first. I've since made another batch of this and for some reason it was a little more wet and not as elasticy. The taste was still very good, but Carly's batch came out better.

They got quite close to the van. In fact one morning we were woken up by the van shaking slightly and realized it was a cow scratching on the bumper.

Fremont canyon is a wild spot. I don't think I've been to a climbing area with such shear walls into a river.

This canyon is at the end of a man-made lake which is in turn more or less in the middle of no place.

Ford DeJournette Homestead Cabin in bumblechuck Utah. The sign on the outside said Ford and Rosalie lived here from spring to autumn tending flocks of sheep from 1915-1920.

Some Fremont pertroglyphs. An interesting point of these is that they are 35' off the present day ground level. 1000 years ago the ground was higher allowing the Fremont people to carve them.

Beauty Cave was quite dark and required headlamps. The air was +30 deg cooler than outside and humid too. There were tiny drops of of moisture that reflected our lights back at us making the walls look like they were shining.

Since we couldn't stay in Tuolmne we drove down to Mono Lake and bivied there. Cooking breakfast on the side of the road.

Quick tourist stop to Mono Lake to check out the tufas. Springs entering the lake have minerals and mixed with the water to form these limestone structures. Since the source streams for the lake were detoured to LA the level of the lake dropped leaving these structures exposed.

Camp at North Lake Campground where we spent two nights.

Heading to outside of Lone Pine, CA for our trip up to Mt. Whitney. We camped at the highest elevation we could to avoid the heat, but it was still pretty low down. This area had experienced a fire a month or two ago.

This tree is over 4,000 years old or approximately the same age as the oldest pyramids in Egypt.

A couple of other climbers who'd summitted a little before us. We ended up joining ropes for a rap on the way down.

After hanging out in Jackson for a little while we headed towards Lander, but decided to stop about an hour outside of the park for the evening. This was a nice spot near a stream.

It isn't every day that you can do 6 miles of hiking, the length in the gulch, in barefeet with comfort.

This area, called Swiss Cheese Falls, had some really cool water sculpted stone.

On the descent you head down a number of smooth sandstone slabs. In this spot in the shade we found some ice!

The garbage of P2. This was soo wet and I made it worse while climbing. The floor at the bottom had a thin ice layer on top of it which made for walking in puddles. This image shows the texture of the strange ice at the surface better than the one for P1, but they were similar features.

Bear Lake from the top of Red Spur Mtn about 15 miles distant as the crow flies.

Epic fail by the Carribean Custard shop in Garden City. Um yeah, I did order a cone.

I had a fair amount of daylight left after I got to Garden City so. decided in doing a circumnavigation of the Lake. This is about 50 miles and quite nice. I liked the East Shore the best as it is less developed. This is on the Idaho side.

Wildflowers were bloom.

Most of the problems were pretty difficult for the grade. I was about to get this V3 after numerous attempts.

More wildflowers going off. This was the first time I'd been to this vantage point of the range.

Micah making sure we're all doing fine. After getting to camp and setting up our tents we headed up to Sharkfin Tower for a short afternoon of climbing.

A view towards Forbidden Peak. The East Ridge (5.8) is on the left splitting the sun/shade sides. The North Ridge (5.6) is the ridge leading down from the summit to the right. We did both routes on our stay. To approach the North Ridge you need to traverse the Boston Glacier seen below the peak.

I got to lead the final block to the summit. The last pitch is some real climbing at 5.6.

Our second big objective for the trip was trail running the Enchantments Traverse. It is an 19 mile, 5000' of gain trail through some beautiful terrain. We got a shuttle since it is a point to point hike. We started off in the dark.

There's so much water on this trail there's no need to try and pack all you need. We never had more than 1.5L in our packs.
