Snowshoeing

With out getting into all the details, Chrystal and I had a free two night stay up in Pittsfield, MA on Dec. 19-21.  We had planned on going skiiing and snowshoeing.  Under and amazing conincidence we had our first snowstorm on Friday the 19th!  This was great for our plans, though it did slow travel getting up there.  I left work around 3:30 to head up to Hartford.  Rt. 15 was slow but ok.  Most people kept it two lanes which allowed me an ther WRX to cruise relatively comfortably at 45mph.  Snow tires and AWD are great!

After getting to Hartford and running a few errands we headed up to Pittsfield.  This part of the drive took the longest.  The Mass Pike was EMPTY.  There were numerous times that we couldn’t see taillights in front of us or headlights behind us for extended periods.  The road was in decent shape but it was snowing very hard.  So much that I needed to slow down because I couldn’t see where the highway was going.

We finally checked-in around 10:30pm.  The room was nice and we were looking forward to a fun day Saturday.  After fulfilling our obligations in the morning we then took off to do some snowshoeing.  It was Chrystal’s first time and the first time in a long time for me, and the first with my new snowshoes.  There was no wind at all Saturday which made it very comfortable.  There was a fresh 7-8 inches on top of a base so it was perfect showing weather.

We trotted around the parking lot for a little looking for a trail.  After finally finding it we followed it for about an hour but it seemed to come to a dead end after that.  Since it was getting late we decided to turn around and go back to the car.

Sunday we went Chrystal went skiing and I went snowboarding.  Turns out Chrystal is really good for only having been a few times!  After about 3-4 runs on the novice (no bunny) slope we went all the way to the top.  We took the longest trail down.  Close to two miles!  It took us almost an hour because we had to stop a bunch of times.  The day was a little windy but other than that it was a great skiing/riding day.

We had a great weekend.  Hopefully I’ll be able to get Chrystal’s pictures from the skiing day and post those.
